Two examinations, different questions

Upper endoscopy and colonoscopy look at different parts of the digestive tract. The reason for the test determines which examination is appropriate and how the findings will guide care.

Before the procedure is scheduled

• Explain the reason for your referral and any current symptoms.
• Bring previous endoscopy and pathology reports, including any history of polyps.
• Review your medications, allergies and past experiences with sedation.
• Ask how the procedure, pathology results and follow-up will be communicated.

Plan for more than the examination

Preparation, transportation and follow-up are part of the care plan. The office will provide instructions for the examination you are having. See preparation and recovery for questions to clarify before the day of your procedure.
