What does it examine?
Upper endoscopy, also called EGD, uses a flexible camera to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. It can help evaluate symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, persistent upper abdominal symptoms or suspected bleeding. Biopsies may help answer questions that appearance alone cannot resolve.
What to clarify beforehand
- What question is the examination intended to answer?
- Will biopsies or other treatments be considered?
- What fasting and medication instructions apply to me?
- What sedation is planned, and who should take me home?
What about risks and results?
Sedation reactions, bleeding and perforation are potential complications. The team will explain the risks relevant to the planned examination. Initial findings may be available promptly; biopsy results take additional time. Ask when and how you should expect those results.
