Why have a colonoscopy?
Colonoscopy examines the rectum and colon with a flexible camera. It may be used for colorectal cancer screening or to investigate symptoms and abnormal test results. Polyps may be removed and tissue sampled during the examination.
Your history changes the plan
Bring earlier colonoscopy and pathology reports. Personal or family history, prior polyps and the reason for referral help guide the timing and follow-up. Do not assume that every patient needs the same interval between examinations.
Preparation matters
A clean colon helps the examiner see the lining. Follow the specific bowel preparation and eating instructions supplied by the team. Ask in advance about medicines, diabetes management and transportation after sedation.
After the examination
Ask how you will receive findings and pathology results and when the next examination is recommended. Bleeding, perforation and sedation-related problems are possible risks to discuss beforehand. Contact the care team promptly for severe pain, fever or significant bleeding afterward.
