Understanding the condition
Pancreatic cancer may cause jaundice, weight loss, abdominal or back discomfort, or digestive changes. Several different tumor types can arise in the pancreas; the diagnosis matters.
What the evaluation looks for
Specialized imaging, tissue sampling when indicated and staging help determine whether removal is feasible. The relationship to major blood vessels is one part of that assessment.
How treatment is chosen
Care may include chemotherapy before or after surgery, other systemic treatments and procedures to relieve obstruction. A Whipple operation is appropriate for some tumors in the head of the pancreas, not every pancreatic cancer. Nutrition, symptom relief and the patient’s goals belong in the treatment plan.
Questions worth asking
- Is the tumor resectable, borderline resectable or unresectable?
- What is the purpose of treatment before surgery?
- How will digestion, nutrition and symptoms be supported?
When to seek help promptly
Jaundice with fever, severe worsening pain or persistent vomiting requires urgent assessment.
