Understanding the condition
A thyroid nodule is a lump within the thyroid gland. It may be discovered on examination or imaging. Thyroid hormone function and the risk of cancer are separate questions.
What the evaluation looks for
Assessment commonly includes thyroid blood tests and ultrasound. Ultrasound features and size help determine whether needle biopsy is needed. Normal thyroid blood tests do not rule out a significant nodule.
How treatment is chosen
Many benign nodules can be monitored. Surgery may be considered for suspicious findings, selected indeterminate biopsies, growth or pressure symptoms. The amount of thyroid removed and the risks to voice, calcium balance and future hormone needs should be discussed.

- Is biopsy indicated, and what would an indeterminate result mean?
- What are the alternatives to surgery in my situation?
When to seek help promptly
Rapid neck swelling, breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening swallowing difficulty needs urgent assessment.
