Understanding the condition
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. Acute pancreatitis develops suddenly; chronic pancreatitis causes ongoing damage. Gallstones and alcohol are important causes, but medicines and other conditions can also be involved.
What the evaluation looks for
Symptoms, blood tests and imaging help establish the diagnosis and identify complications. Nutrition, hydration and organ function need attention in more severe illness.
How treatment is chosen
Treatment may include hospital support, pain control and nutritional care. Gallstone pancreatitis may require gallbladder treatment to prevent recurrence. Drainage or surgery for pancreatic complications is individualized; an inflamed pancreas does not automatically need an operation.
Questions worth asking
- What caused the pancreatitis?
- What would prevent another episode?
- Do I need specialist follow-up for digestion or blood sugar?
When to seek help promptly
Severe persistent upper abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever or difficulty breathing requires urgent assessment.
