Understanding the condition
A ventral hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall. An incisional hernia develops at a previous surgical incision. The visible bulge may be larger than the actual opening, and more than one defect may be present.
What the evaluation looks for
Prior operative reports and imaging help define the anatomy. Smoking, diabetes, nutrition, previous mesh and wound problems can affect healing and recurrence.
How treatment is chosen
Observation or repair is individualized. Repair may involve sutures, mesh and an open or minimally invasive approach. Large, recurrent or infected repairs may require an abdominal-wall specialist and preparation before surgery.

- What can be improved before repair?
- What are the expected lifting restrictions and recurrence risks?
When to seek help promptly
Severe pain, persistent vomiting or a painful bulge that no longer reduces needs emergency assessment.
